Adult MINISTRY
First Presbyterian’s Adult Ministry is a vibrant place to grow closer in connection with the body of Christ and to listen for God’s calling. Opportunities exist for adults to “grow in faith and in friendship” through Sunday School classes that range from a Bible study to contemporary issues. All in Groups, small group Bible studies, special one time classes, and prayer partners are additional ways you can engage with the people of First Pres Salisbury as you deepen your faith through study.
Sunday School
A relationship with God only grows when nurtured. Sunday School nurtures faith by surrounding you with a small group who will care about you and engage you to learn more about spiritual practices, scripture, and living faithfully in the world. Sunday School deeply grounds us in our faith, giving us strong roots that help us grow. Many of our adult Sunday School classes have been meeting for a few years, some for decades, but all are warm and welcoming for new people. For help figuring out which class is right for you or to make a connection with a Sunday School teacher, contact Pastor Lara. For seasonal updates about what each class is currently studying, refer to our Sunday School Offerings Brochure.
Joy
Are you 55 or older and want an easy way to meet new people at First Pres? JOY is for you. Just Older Youth is a group of vibrant men and women over 55 years of age. They meet monthly for fellowship and fun. Some of our outings in the past have included game night, a razzle dazzle party, touring the tulips in Kernersville, supporting our local entrepreneurs with lunch and shopping in downtown Salisbury, and playing with the children of the First Pres Day School to read together or make crafts. See the church calendar for our next event, these are wonderful opportunities to make new connections and friendships.
EMBC
Everyman’s Bible Class (EMBC) is an enduring group of men who learn together as much as they laugh together. EMBC has been meeting weekly at First Presbyterian Church for over 100 years and enjoys a wonderful fellowship of multi-generational men who share a love of strong Bible lessons and singing hymns. EMBC is taught by a mix of seminary professors, pastors, and class members including some young men who are fondly called “Young Lions.” The EMBC gives generously to local nonprofits and serves together in the community. They have an Annual Oyster Roast for prospective members. In recent years, their numbers have been growing with men in their 20s and 30s thanks to a Young Lion Initiative based on Psalm 104, “The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God.” A virtual option via Zoom to join the class is available each Sunday. All class members receive a weekly email summary with a recording of each lesson to keep everyone engaged and informed. To learn more, contact the church office or Tony Almedia. Presbyterian Women
Presbyterian Women, Inc., is the women’s organization in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). We are a community of more than 200,000 women who participate in Presbyterian Women (PW) and align our ministry and hearts around a shared purpose, the PW Purpose.
Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves
• to nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,
• to support the mission of the church worldwide,
• to work for justice and peace, and
• to build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.
Our PW ladies meet monthly for Bible Study and fellowship. Our Prayer Shawl Ministry is an outreach team under PW. They knit prayer shawls and baby blankets to be given to church and community members in need. They also meet monthly. Please check the church google calendar for our next meeting and plan to join them!
