On Holy Thursday, or “Maundy Thursday,” we bear witness to the Last Supper. Christ’s body broken, Christ’s blood poured out—for us. But the word “Maundy” asks us to remember another moment that happened on that Thursday. Maundy comes from the Latin “Mandatum,” meaning “commandment.” Holy Thursday is “Commandment Thursday.” We remember the “new commandment” to love one another as Christ loved his disciples that dark evening. And how did he love them? Well, by doing something no one in their right mind would ever do—he washed their feet.
The Maundy Thursday service at First Pres is one of the most powerful and moving services of the entire year. There’s a temptation to attend church on Palm Sunday and to come back on Easter Sunday. We invite you this year, not to hop, skip, and jump over Holy Week. Come to them all! Childcare is available.
